The Medway Assassins Peewee (Under 12) team competed in the Peewee Nationals Tournament this weekend in Hastings.
The Tournament was contested by the 9 top Peewee teams in the country. As it is the Assassins first competitive season, this was going to be an exploratory tournament to gauge where our standard fits against the top teams from other leagues throughout the country.
After finishing 2nd in the first group stage with one win and one defeat, the Assassins went on to play one of their regular opponents, Eastbourne Edge. As had been the case during most of the season, the Assassins came off 2nd best and therefore needed a win against Chippy Trixters. The Trixters were a hard team and although the Assassins led most of the game, and outplayed their opponents, the Trixters grinded a 5-5 draw which meant the Assassins chances of playing in the semi final were down to the goal difference in the game between Edge and Trixters.
Luckily the Edge comfortably beat the Trixters and therefore the Assassins were through to the semi finals! Unfortunately, they were drawn against last years winners from Stansted, so a very tough game ahead. The Spitfires were too strong for the young Assassins side, whose average age is 9 and progressed to the final which they then went on to win. The Assassins faced Ash Vipers in the 3rd place play off game, which would be a re run of our first game which saw the Assassins lose 3-1.
Fired up and not wanting to finish 4th, the Assassins were at the top of their game and with the support from the increasing loud crowd, outplayed their opposition and comfortably beat them 6-2 to finish 3rd place in their first ever Nationals which is a massive achievement for all players involved. They also won the tournament Fair Play Award which shows great discipline by all players.
A tough weekend with lots of hard games, but the Assassins can now go into the off season knowing they finished 3rd in a National competition.
